Am I evolving? Am I more advanced today than yesterday? How about you? Today, are you a better version of who your were?

Biologically, the evolution marches on. Our bodies are learning to cope with new stressors in our environment such as chemical laden foods and water, noise in our environment, smog in our skies, and increasing harmful radiation from our sun. We are inundated with world news as it happens thanks to technology. We have friends from all corners of the globe compliments of social media. Life on the farm is not what old farm boys like us remember from decades ago. Many of us lament over “the good old days”.

But, our biological evolution cannot be stopped. Genes will respond to changes in our environment and will pass on to generations of the future. Who we are now will be a part of who mankind is centuries from now.

How about evolution….speaking spiritually? How do I evaluate? Will my spirit be present somewhere in someone a thousand years from now? The spirit of God indwelled in me when I accepted the truth of a Higher Power, when I invited Jesus into my life as Lord and Savior, when I pledged to live on a higher spiritual plane. That Spirit (call it the Holy Spirit if you choose) will not remain in my lifeless body when my body dies. No, it will rejoin the universal spirit from whence it came. It is eternal. It will defeat death as it again becomes part of that which is, always has been and always will be. Jesus himself told us about this. The Gospel of John in our Bible speaks to the parallel universe of Spirit.  It is the ultimate truth of our lives. Physical existence on earth is merely a temporary stopping point in our individual journeys, a side trip. My personal spiritual evolution is my life’s responsibility and duty. I owe it to that someone a thousand years from now who may be in desperate need of amazing grace just as I have needed God’s intercession in my lifetime.  I want my spirit to join billions of other believers and all of God’s messengers to provide the same spark eons from now to that one lonely, that forsaken, that rudderless soul in need.

But, what about mankind, the human race?  Some naysayers will point to all the violence in our world, the intolerance, and the depravity.  Agreeably, we are not what we could be as a civilization.  However, upon considering mankind’s history, its checkered past, its addiction to theological zeal, possibly we can see the twinkling of what God intended for us from the beginning.  Our own scriptures, the Bible, as well as other faiths’ sacred writings all began with the common denominator of peace.  It has been mankind’s additional input over the centuries that has introduced a message of intolerance and theological exclusiveness. Barring our extinction at the hands of natural catastrophe or human ego, there is hope for spiritual evolution to a higher plane of existence.

By John Lennon

Imagine there’s no heaven
It’s easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people living for today

Imagine there’s no countries
It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people living life in peace, you

You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope some day you’ll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people sharing all the world, you

You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope some day you’ll join us
And the world will be as one
